How to Make Things Easier at Tax Administration
There are several ways available for taxes paperwork at the Spanish tax Administration in the new Internet era. Find out which one suits you better.
Digital Authentication
eIDAS Authentication Now Available for Key Procedures for EU Citizens
As of October 2, 2024, eIDAS authentication is operational on the Spanish Tax Agency’s electronic headquarters. It allows EU citizens to access key tax procedures, such as filing income tax returns (IRPF / IRNR) or the main VAT forms, using their national electronic identification.
Obtaining an FNMT Electronic Certificate
The electronic certificate is a digital signature installed in the browser to verify your identity online. It allows you to perform transactions from a computer, mobile device, or tablet on our electronic headquarters and other organizations that also accept it. In the case of the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT), when you access a procedure requiring an electronic certificate, a window will appear on the screen to choose the appropriate certificate and continue with the process. The Spanish Tax Agency serves as a verification office for FNMT.
The websites of the certificate-issuing entities carry out request and acquisition of a valid electronic certificate for tax purposes.
Main Options for Electronic Identification
Find out how to access digital admin procedures: Cl@ve, certificate, electronic DNI, etc.
- Certificate and electronic ID The electronic certificate is a digital signature installed on your browser to verify your identity online. It allows you to manage your procedures from your computer, mobile device or tablet at our E-Office, and on online platforms of other institutions that have this system enabled. The electronic DNI also allows you to identify yourself to carry out procedures online.
- Mobile Key Cl@ve Móvil is the new electronic access system to public services that allows citizens to authenticate themselves in the procedure they are carrying out in the Electronic Office. The system offers the novelty of allowing users to scan a QR code. This prevents the user from having to enter their identification data on the access screen. If you cannot scan the QR code, you can confirm the authentication request that will be sent to the Cl@ve APP.
- Access for EU citizens (eIDAS) EU Citizen Authentication System (eIDAS) is the authentication system implemented under the eIDAS Regulation. It allows citizens of an EU country to use the identification and authentication mechanisms provided by another EU country. This way they can access public services in other Member States. eIDAS facilitates access to public administration services in a secure and efficient manner, and is an important step towards digital integration in Europe.

Less Common Ways
- Reference number Authentication and identification system for individuals, which will allow you to carry out certain procedures and formalities, mainly for the Income Tax campaign.
- DNI/NIE number with contrast dataThere are procedures in the electronic headquarters of the Tax Agency that allow you to identify yourself with your DNI or NIE number with an additional contrasting piece of information.
- Without identificationAt the Tax Agency’s electronic headquarters you can carry out some procedures related to a file without having to identify yourself and by entering a verification data. This is a CSV if you have received a notification/communication or the file code.
- TOKENTemporary code to act on your own behalf or on behalf of third parties through the telephone channel
What is a CSV
The Secure Verification Code (CSV) is printed in the footer of the first page of each document. This code ensures the integrity of the document by verifying it through the Spanish Tax Agency’s electronic headquarters.
All documents and certificates issued by the Tax Agency, regardless of the method of request, will include a verification code. So with the code the recipient can verify their authenticity and validity on the website. Therefore, the Secure Verification Code allows for the verification of the integrity of the copy of this electronic document.
📄 Submission of Documentation
Documents Issued Abroad
- If the documentation was issued abroad in a language other than Spanish (Castellano), a sworn translation (traducción jurada) of the documents must be provided.
- Furthermore, if the documentation was issued by foreign officials or authorities, it must be submitted with the Hague Apostille and a sworn translation.
EU Exceptions (Regulation UE 2016/1191)
- Notwithstanding the above, public documents falling within the scope of Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 (covering birth, proof of life, death, name, marriage, divorce, judicial separation, marriage annulment, registered partnership, cancellation of registered partnership, parentage, adoption, domicile, residence, and nationality) may be drawn up in the language of the issuing Member State.
- However, they must attach the corresponding Multilingual Standard Form. For these specific documents, neither the Apostille nor a sworn translation is required.
European Certificate of Succession
- The European Certificate of Succession must be provided translated into Spanish, but a sworn translation is not necessary.
Documents Issued in Spain
- In the case of documentation issued in Spain in a language other than Spanish (Castellano), it must be provided with a translation into Spanish. This is because the competent body for the management of the tax, the National Tax Management Office (Oficina Nacional de Gestión Tributaria), has its sole headquarters in Madrid, a territory where no official language other than Spanish exists.
